EURO CURRENCY IN THE BRITISH PRESS

Starting from 1 January 2002, 12 countries of European Union have been using a new single currency according to what had been estabilished by the treaty of Maastricht on 7 February 1992.
In Britain debates about the possible adoption of the euro are one of the main topics of the political, social and cultural life.
The public opinion is divided into two opposing arrays.
The labour Party and the Liberal Democratic Party are in favour of a UK entry into the European Monetary Union, whereas the Conservative Party strongly opposes an European Monetary integration.
The present governementwill have to call a referendum to ask the citizens whether the British people are in favour of the euro or not.
The newborn currency and the campaign for the referendum are of the main topics of discussion in the British press despite differences in dealing with the topic euro, both the sites have sections about it.
We have chosen two articles, one from each newspaper, dealing with the campaign pro and aganist the single currency.
We will analyse the one from the times and will let students study that form the other broadsheet.
We will examine the way the argoments are built and we will mention the most tjìhe levant linguistic features characterising the texts.
The language of politics and the language of economics are highly metaphorical as they make extensive use of figures of speech to forward their message.
The final result is a word whose meaning is a compenetration of the two semantic fields.
The stylistic elements and the metaphors contribute to forward the consevative ideology of the times.
They achieve this aim first by connoting tha euro and the choiche to enter European Monetary Union negatively.
Then they also act to firmly set argoments in favour of the British economic, political and social independence.

Analizzeremo quello dal "The times" e lasceremo studiare agli studenti quello dall'altro quotidiano.
