Romanticism

The term romanticism first appeared in England in the 17 th century in the sense of extravagant, unreal, but by the end of the 18 th century it was connected with feelings, immagination and emoctions.
Romanticism was the revolt against the rules and conventions of the classical school.
But it was also a strong rebellion against all authorities, based as it was on a belief in liberty for individual.
The first generation includes such poets on Wordworth and Coleridge.
They were a first entusiastic for the new ideas of liberty and justice of the French revolution. The second generation includes Byron and Shelly.
There were less affected, by the revolution than their predecessors.
They soon withdrew from society and remained isolated.
This romanticism became a citrature of social conflicts.
